Coaching and Healing Basics, Ch 2 - Your True Self

ree

Let's begin with this...

There is no such thing as a fully mature or fully sane being !

May that bring you some relief at this moment :)

Consider your true self to be the part of you that feels or wants something at any given time. This is different than what some thinkers call "the false self" which is the external performer or shell that surrounds the true self and was shaped over time to meet the needs and expectations of society.

Therapy is usually initiated when the true self has never been able to speak or have a voice. When feelings were considered contrary to expectations, Therapy is also intitated when one is unable to realize that a false self is necessary and sometimes needed to be put on at times

Alain de Botton describes this as the "manic confromaist and the manic rebel"

To touch base with your true self, a question to ask is "If there were no consequences, what I would now want to do is..

It's the fear of consequences that shuts down one relationship with yourself and understanding your basic needs.

A sumle way to tap into your true self is to sit at the end of the day and ask yourself. "What came up for me today? What am I really feeling"

Regret? Harmony? Envy? Satisfaction? Shame?

You'll usually find that there are set of emotions behind the presenting emotions thata re worth exploring.

And you'll make soem interesting discoveries.
